For few other places, as for Sicily, talking about “traditional products” means embarking on a journey within a journey, encountering artisanal crafts that
open up perspectives on time and evoke images of places. Important in the field of craftsmanship is S. Stefano di Camastra, the largest ceramics production center in Sicily, which also represents one of the most interesting traditional tourist routes and is also known as the “town of ceramics.” This is how this highly active center, located on the border between the provinces of Palermo and Messina, is best known throughout the world.

Having adopted the coloring and glazing techniques of Neapolitan artisans, they produced, throughout the 19th century, an innumerable series of majolica tiles whose originality expresses a precise moment in the history of Sicilian art. The birth of ceramics as a true art form can be traced back to the early 20th century, when production shifted from an exclusively utilitarian range consisting of
terracotta objects such as vases, jars, “quartare and bummuli,” to artistic ceramics, which have become increasingly refined over the years and now form the backbone of the economy of Santo Stefano. A distinctive town, unique of its kind: wherever you turn, you see plates, tiles, and mosaics, all made from brightly colored
ceramics.

The production of ceramic objects in Santo Stefano di Camastra began approximately three hundred years ago, as a result of a catastrophic event that destroyed the town’s original location, forcing the inhabitants to move to a new site farther downhill. The need to build new homes led the people of Santo Stefano to make use of a material widely available in the area: clay.

Alongside traditional production, a degree of diversification has developed, driven mainly by young businesses encouraged to enter
the sector with a certain degree of product innovation.
